Mortality Patterns of Rural Village in Korea

Abstract
To identify mortality pattern of rural community, the total death, 125 occurred in two townships (Naega and Sunwon Myuns) in Kang Wha County during April .1, 1975-March 31, 1976 were studied.
All death was reported by family health workers and causes of death was identified by public physicians. The families .of deceased were interviewed by two trained nurses using a pretested questionnaire.. A sociologist visited to. the ceremonial places and made case studies.
The family health workers, public health nurses and public physicians were all members of the Yonsei University Community Health Teaching Project.
The study focuses on various, death rates causes of death, cultural factors related, to death, the economic burden imposed on the family by death and other .sociological aspects. The following is a brief summary of results of the study.
1. Death rates
The age adjusted crude death rate was 10.6 per 1,000. The neonatal death rate was 23.4 per 1,000 live-birth and the infant mortality rate was 27.2 per 1,000 live-birth. No maternity death was observed.
2. Causes of death
The most common causes of death was cerebrovascular diseases(221. 8 deaths per 100, 000) and was followed by malignant neoplasms (158.4 deaths per 100, 000). The death due to pulmonary tuberculosis ranked. 5 with a death rates of 55.5 per 100,000 and the death due to pneumonia and respiratory diseases ranked 8 and the associated death rate was 47.5 per 100, 000.

These statistics imply that¢¥ the causes of death in rural Korea has rapidly changed recently, from infectious-to noninfectious diseases. 3. Culture and death
(1) 90. 4% died at home and 3. 2% died in hospitals,
(2) Traditional funeral ceremonies were held in 60% of the deaths studied, 12. 8 % had Christian burial services, 1. 6% by Buddhist burial and 13.6% were buried with a traditional funeral combined with sorceress exorcism.
(3) Burial took place within three days of death in 70% of the cases and 21 of the respondants reported that. the funeral occured more than three days after death
(4) The majority (95%) of the funeral took place in the home of the deceased. The persons in charge of the funeral service were-male in most of the time and, were either a family members or a relative.
(5) Only 20% of the mourners in the family wore hemp clothes, the traditional mourning attire, however the majority wore white clothes, a more recently introduced type of funeral attire.
(6) The number of friends and relatives who called to give condolence to the family and pay last, respects to the deceased ranged from 100 to 150 persons., however more than 300 persons, called in 3. 2% of cases. On the average 50-100 persons stayed over night with the family of the deceased.
(7) The death was announced by physicans in 60% of the cases, by village people in 40%.
(8) The corpse was carried on a funeral bier which was common property of a community in 83%, of the cases.
(9) Cremation was performed, in 3% of the deaths, but the vast majority (97%) were buried without cremation.
(10) The most important cultural variables related to death were age and socioeconomic status of the deceased. The sex of the deceased, however, did not appear to be an important variables.
4. Economic of death
(1) Slightly more than half (45%) of the deceased utilized funds from a funeral "kye", a type of mutual funeral financing association which is typical in rural Korea. Table ware and utensils used at funeral feast were community owned in 82% of the cases.
(2) Average total money income as a mark of respect for the deceased was W 39, 000. Traditionally. gifts of money are given at a funeral as a sign of respect for the deceased. An average of W39, 000 was received, and the amount increased according to the increasing age of the deceased.
(3) The average expense incurred for funeral services was W107, 800.
(4) The average debt incurred¢¥ from the funeral expenses was W20,700.
(5) The age and socioeconomic status of the deceased were the most important variables that influenced the economy of funeral services.
